The extended trailer for James Gunn’s new Superman movie was just released and its giving off groovy vibes. In just a few minutes, Gunn was able to show that he gets the zaniness of the Superman comics from the 60s and 70s. The Boy Scout’s comics during that era were off the wall crazy and full of looniness. They were a perfect balance of sci-fi mixed with LSD. Gunn is definitely giving us a live-action Superman we’ve never been seen before. However, the question remains: will the audience respond?
Krypto is Greater Than Scooby-Doo

Did you ever think you’d see a live-action version of Krypto? Did you ever think you’d want to? Honestly, I never thought Krypto would work in a Superman movie. But now, after seeing the sneak peek, Krypto is going to add the right amount of levity that a Superman movie needs.
I am not going to bore you with all the detail about Krypto. If you are interested in knowing more about Krypto check out this page.
The Audience Appears to be Divided

Here’s the deal: Gunn is making Superman vulnerable, relatable, and breakable. Zac Snyder and David Goyer were never able to ground Superman in a way that made sense because he was always too God-like.
I think some are missing the point. Gunn isn’t getting his kicks by “torturing” Big Blue. Gunn is getting his kicks by bringing levity to a situation that is relatable to dog owners. I can’t tell you how many times my dog has reacted improper to a situation causing more mayhem than good.
What about the robots blasting him with sun rays and Sups crying out in pain? Again, this moment is to show that Superman needs help. He’s vulnerable. He’s bruised and beaten. It’s not like he can go to the local medical express and get some aspirin. He needs something more, and this is right out of the comics. What more can you ask for?

Expectations
I am still keeping my expectations in check. I don’t love everything I’ve seen so far, which I wrote about here. However, the tone of the film seems to be more in line with Superman so I am hopeful.
Check out the podcast episode I do with my good friend Eric as we discuss the first Superman trailer that was dropped.

I blog and podcast with my life-long friend. Enjoy the ride before it’s over!
