Like many of you, I fell in love with Call of Duty: Warzone when it first came out. I spent countless hours in Verdansk and many more in the Gulag. I ignored my wife and kid so that I could squad up with the boys, and take out opponents dressed for Halloween. Even though I don’t love everything about the game, I still play it to this day.
When I heard Battlefield was going to release their own version of Warzone – I was stoked. Based on the leaked footage of REDSEC, I thought for sure it would kill Warzone. But after playing the game for an extended period of time, I have my doubts.
Here is what I don’t like about REDSEC:
- The squad names are all the same color and the names don’t have a shaded background making them hard to read. In Warzone, your squad members are all different colors making it easy to help direct members by calling out their color instead of their names.
- The rebooting of a fallen teammate is similar to Fortnite where you have to hang around the reboot station for a period of time to get your buddy back in the fight. This encourages opposing teams to camp the stations and pickoff those trying to do a good deed. In Warzone, you can quickly reboot teammates making it less desirable to camp the buy stations.
- REDSEC’s gameplay pushes teams to complete missions in order to get weapons and axillary items such as airstrikes. Occasionally, you will find these items in crates but it rarely happens. In Warzone, you can choose to avoid missions and collect money to acquire what you need when you need it. This alleviates you going through the laboring process of completing missions.
- I like the fact that REDSEC doesn’t have a Gulag but it seems like the likelihood of getting rebooted in REDSEC is much slimmer resulting in fallen teammates watching others play instead of playing themselves.
- Due to a lack of reboot stations, them being camped, and the likelihood of getting rebooted is slim-to-none, players are slowing their gameplay down to a crawl.
- I also find it burdensome to read everything in the crates so that I don’t pass up on any goodies. And what is with the upgrading of weapons? Just drop the weapons out of the crates in various forms. Make the items have a brighter color or bigger symbols so I know without reading what I am picking up.
- The size of the players seem too small for the landscape. There have been so many times that I felt like I was shooting at ant-sized players that just blend into the landscape.
- The menus and pages are complicated to navigate and I find myself hitting the proceed button multiple times to confirm selections I thought I already made.
- The overall look seems to be too clean and scaled back in detail. This could be because everything is destructible, but it feels less natural of an environment.
- The learning curve seems a bit drastic because everything from trying to squad up to adding an attachment to your gun requires you to go through multiple selections. Make it easy!
I haven’t totally abandoned REDSEC, but it is a frustrating game to get the feel of.

I blog and podcast with my life-long friend. Enjoy the ride before it’s over!
